Fire
Department
is
the
best
equipped
volunteer
fire
department
in
Brazoria
County.
They
operate
on
a
small
budget
from
the
City
of
West
Columbia,
and
are
mainly
supported
by
the
citizens
of
West
Columbia
in
the
way
of
donations.
History
The
West
Columbia
Volunteer
Fire
Department
was
organized
in
1940
after
a
large
fire
destroyed
Wright's
Motor
Co.,
a
downtown
business.
The
downtown
business
area
was
threatened
and
the
fire
had
to
be
extinguished
by
firemen
from
Bay
City
&
Angleton.
W.
C.
"Cecil"
Autry
immediately
began
organizing
a
fire
department.
W.
C.
Autry
was
the
city's
first
Fire
Chief
&
later
that
year
the
Fire
Dept.
received
it's
first
Fire
Engine.
In
1947
The
WCVFD
received
it's
second
Fire
Truck,
a
Ford
Triple
Combination
500
gallon
pumper
with
a
350
gallon
booster
tank.
The
West
Columbia
Volunteer
Fire
Department
now
boosts
a
fleet
of
10
vehicles. They
are
equipped
to
extricate
accident
victims
using
their
"Jaws
of
Life".
The
present
Fire
Station
was
dedicated
in
1972.
The
Fire
Department
has
a
membership
roster
of
32
active
&
well-trained
members.
