West
Columbia served as the
First Capitol of the Republic in
1836. Exhibits include artifacts
ranging as far back as the Texas
Revolutionary Period. Numerous
images of the building in which
Sam Houston took the oath of
office as the first president of
Texas are on display.

It
is only fitting that a historical museum be located at the
site of the First Capitol of the Republic of Texas,
established in Columbia in 1836. The mission of the museum
is to bring better
understanding and appreciation of the rich history of West
and East Columbia in Brazoria County.
